Wrestlers headed to NCAA Championships
The Boise State wrestling team has a lot to look forward to next season.
The Broncos will welcome back 17 underclassmen and will most likely be one of the favorites to compete for the Pac-10 championship next season.
For now though, the Broncos must face reality.
For the first time in eight seasons Boise State failed to finish in the top three at last month’s Pac-10 championships.
The Broncos managed to post just 58.5 p,boints as a team and finished ninth. They watched Oregon State run away with the tournament, scoring 110 points.
“The season was decent,” Head Coach Greg Randall said. “I’m not saying it was a great year, but with the injuries that we had and the young guys that we had I thought we did pretty well.”
Despite the Broncos’ mediocre performance at the Pac-10 tournament as a team, BSU will send two wrestlers to the NCAA tournament in Auburn Hills, Mich., next week. Freshman Nate Lee and sophomore Tyler Sherfey each placed third at the tournament in their respective weight classes and earned themselves a bid to compete at nationals. Sophomore heavyweight Andy Patrick received a wild-card berth after he finished sixth in the Pac-10 tournament. Although Patrick qualified he will be unable to wrestle because of an injury from the tournament.
“Our young guys did some good things at the tournament,” Randall said. “Overall I think our youth and our inexperience caught up with us but we had some individuals do well and we’re pleased about that.”
Should both Sherfey and Lee finish in the top eight at the NCAA tournament they will qualify as All-Americans. Sherfey missed out on the award last year as a freshman.
“Our plan for these two is to be wrestling on Saturday,” Randall said. “If you wrestle on Saturday then you’re an All-American.
We are confident they can do it and represent Boise State in such a great way.”
Meanwhile the Broncos must continue to focus and prepare for the NCAA tournament, but Coach Randall can’t help but be a little bit excited about next season.
“We’re going to be much better next season and I’m looking forward to that,” Randall said. “A lot of our guys are coming back and hopefully we’ll stay healthy and be able to compete at a high level and win some matches.”
The NCAA tournament will be held March 15-17 at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Mich.
