In January many Boise State football fans requested a game between the National Champion Florida Gators and the undefeated BSU football team. Last Sunday the Gators arrived in Boise for a showdown - with the women of the BSU gymnastics program.

The Broncos hosted the No. 1  Gators in a dual in which Florida cruised to a 197.250-191.275 win over the Broncos. BSU Head Coach Sam Sandmire said she was proud of her team’s performance against the nation’s best and is confident it will be a step in the right direction with just two regular season duals left.

“It was great having Florida here,” Sandmire said. “It’s great to see where our future can be and what it takes to get to that kind of level. We always schedule the best teams that we can schedule because we believe that you rise to the occasion.”

The loss dropped the women’s record to 6-10 on the season.
However, BSU has shown tremendous improvement throughout, despite the loss of several experienced gymnasts due to injury.

“The girls have been amazingly tenacious and have overcome a lot,” Sandmire said. “Some of our all-around standouts and top recruits have been hurt and out for the season and this team never gave up. The gymnasts that we put in stepped up and did a great job and did what was expected of them.”

Friday the women travel to Cedar City, Utah, to face Southern Utah University in a rematch of the BSU Beauty and the Beast competition held Feb. 9, where BSU prevailed 193.200-192.975. BSU is tied with the Thunderbirds, 13-13 in the all-time series between the two programs.

“Southern Utah is a WAC opponent and they’ve been doing very well,” Sandmire said. “We did beat them earlier in the year so they’ll be out for blood. We’re ready though and we’re excited to go down there and have another chance to get a score that could potentially help us.”

The women return home March 23 when Utah State travels to Boise for the regular season finale. The Utah State dual will be Coach Sandmire’s final dual in Boise after 20 years in charge of the program.

“My plan is just to try and enjoy every minute of this career because it’s coming pretty quick to an end and I am just loving the chance to work with these kids who never give up,” Sandmire said.

The Western Athletic Conference Championship is scheduled for Saturday, March 31, in Cedar City, Utah. The women are vying for the program’s 21st consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regional Championships, which are to be held Saturday, April 14.
