Last Friday students attended conferences and sessions focused on building their leadership skills and honing in on leadership techniques.

The 160 students present at the seminar were nominated by their teachers who feel that these students have potential to be great leaders.

Jay Zarr, the keynote presenter, has over 25 years experience in combining natural settings and adventure-based experiences to teach leadership, teamwork and self-esteem.
He also had a master’s degree in experimental education from Minnesota State University.

He led an inspirational and energetic presentation during the morning session, teaching and reinforcing ideas about leadership in a variety of interactive and attention-getting ways.

C.J. Martin, the keynote speaker, is an alumnus of Boise State University who received a BBA in economics in 1994.

He spoke of his experience in leadership of IBM’s WebSphere Software having more than 100 personnel and $150 million in annual revenue.

His speech was quite inspirational. He concluded with the  thought that if leaders do not have a picture submitted to ASBSU for a charcoal drawing to be done, a not so flattering picture would be used and that embarrassing charcoal image would forever be immortalized in the Student Union Building for all to see.

Special awards were given to certain students who have exemplified leadership in their lives.

These awards included: the Larry G. Selland Leadership Scholarship received by Mark Getecha, the Margie Van Vooren Leadership Development Scholarship received by Michelle Lundquist, the FLS Emerging Student Leader Award given to Lacey Vander Boegh, the Director’s Award received by Taylor Newbold and the President’s Award given to Dang Du.
