After finding the restaurant I located a parking spot behind the building - chose to ignore the sign wanting me to pay a $3 charge, since it was after 5 p.m. on Monday - that way I could spend it on my meal.

As I stepped through the front door, the cashier gave me a smile, greeted me and then  proceeded to ask what I wanted to eat. I noticed that the music was louder than I usually enjoy, but it was a modern-style rock, which I generally like.

I tried to order a sandwich that was similar to the cold cut trio that I always get at Subway. Unlike Subway’s six and 12-inch sandwich lengths, I was offered the choice of a five, eight or 11-inch sandwich. Instead of five different varieties of bread, I was given two options - white or wheat. I decided on an 11-inch club sandwich, including turkey breast, ham, bacon, lettuce and mayo on white.

I figured a drink and chips would come with the meal, considering I paid about $7.50 (the amount I usually pay at Subway). A cup never entered my hand and soon I realized that I had to pay extra for the combo, $2.19 plus tax. The meal turned out to be around $10. Fortunately, parking was $3 off for a limited time only or else I would receive a ticket.

The floor was rustic while the tables and chairs were made of shiny metal. Every piece of furniture I shuffled passed was spotless.

I was the only customer there.

As I finished filling my cup with soda from the machine, it was announced that my sandwich was done.

Here laid the true test. Most of the ingredients I usually like on my Subway sandwiches were also on this one. Wrapped in generic white paper, it impressed me that the company did not flash their logo around on it, the napkins or the cup.

I have to admit, after opening my sandwich, it stayed more in tact than any sandwich I have ever had at Subway. It had a different taste from that of Subway, but was still good. As I scraped a mound of lettuce off the second half of my sandwich I had an interesting thought. Do all of the sub sandwich places meet together and make it mandatory to pile on as much lettuce as it takes to make the sandwich look bigger?

On a scale from 8 – 15, 8 being the best and 15 being the worst, I would rate my overall experience at an 11, three points shy of perfection.

This is due to the parking, loud music and prices. It is an above-average rating because of the rustic atmosphere, friendly service and good food.

Pacific Subs is located at 509 Main Street – Fifth and Main in downtown Boise.
