Most Boise State students will never go behind the scenes at Zoo Boise, but a few lucky Theatre Arts majors got to take a genuine walk on the wild side.

The BSU Theatre Majors Association helped design and build the new African Plains exhibit, which opened in early October.
Mike Baltzell, associate professor of Theatre Arts, received an invitation to work on the exhibit from the City of Boise.

“It’s part of our continuing effort to reach out to the community through the university,” he said.

Baltzell helped design the village, create and buy furniture for the exhibit and perform other miscellaneous tasks.

TMA President Ryan Adolfson said the exhibit was one of four community service projects the club has in the works.

“We sent volunteers over mainly on the weekends,” Adolfson said. “We would help paint things and set up actual parts of the exhibit.”

Some members, like TMA Artistic Director Nicole Orabona, helped give a tour for financial donors to the project.

She said working on the exhibit was well worth her time.
“I think it’s really great,” she said. “And it’s something that’s just really great to be there for so long that I’ll be able to show my family and my friends.”

Adolfson agreed. He said the biggest plus is that, unlike a theater production, their work will endure.

“It’ll be there forever,” he said. “I can go there in months and look at stuff that me and my friends help put up.”

Zoo Boise Development and Marketing Associate Liz Littman said the exhibit encompasses 3.5 acres. She said the mission of the project wasn’t just to bring the animals to Boise, but also to bring the culture of Africa.

The exhibit features an African home, schoolhouse, ranger station and much more.

“They [the TMA] just came and just went for it,” Littman  said. “We couldn’t have imagined it coming out any better.”
