The room on the bottom floor of the Interactive Learning Center is not a computer lab.

It's a digital media studio.

Called "The Zone," this media studio gives students the tools they need to create multimedia projects for their classes, Director of Academic Technologies Ben Hambelton said.

"We believe that today's students need experience in using media as well as being able to utilize it," Hambelton said.

Students who have never used a lab of this sort can learn how to use the equipment.

"We're here to help them," The Zone Manager Jaylene Lee-Wood said. "We really don't like to do their work for them, but we're here to help them out when they have lots of questions."

While the lab's main purpose is for students who have class projects, Lee-Wood said students who want to learn the software on their own time are welcome.

Listed here are a few things that can be done in The Zone. The lab is, by no means, limited to these activities. For a more information, check out itc.boisestate.edu/Studio-D/Introduction.htm.

Podcasting

The Zone offers a microphone that can be checked out for course assignments. There is no sound booth to record in, but Lee-Wood said a simple podcast could be performed on The Zone premises.

Programs used to create: Sony Sound Forge 8.0

Photo slideshow

Also known as a picture slideshow, this allows for pictures to move across the screen - like a screen saver - while playing music or recording words into the background.

Programs used to create: Microsoft Photo Story 3, Nero 7 Ultra Edition.

Vlogging

Vlogging is blogging by video. This is different than developing a standard video. A vlog generally focuses on one person - the person producing it. Much like a blogger writes their views, a vlogger talks about them through video.

Program used to create: Adobe Vlog It!

Video/movie making

Equipment can be checked out for a class project only with approval from a faculty member. Equipment is checked out from the front desk of the Micron/Simplot Building.

Programs used to create: Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0.2, Apple FinalCut Express, Apple iMovie, Microsoft Movie Maker, MovieWorks Deluxe.

Team Spot

Team spot allows a group to work together through a connection between laptops. The Connection moves files from one laptop to another. It also allows for the movement of one user's desktop to a common screen. There are 15 locations around campus.

See itc.boisestate.edu/teamspot for more information.
