The Arbiter exists to provide Boise State students an open forum to learn, discuss, and participate in the Boise State community. We strive to provide as many learning and professional opportunities for students as possible. Your skill level doesn't matter; we are here to help you learn. From those who are just starting out to the more advanced individual who is looking to add to their resume, all are encouraged to apply!

The Arbiter is more than just a 'newspaper.' Web, video, Podcasting, graphic design, business sales, accounting and marketing are just a few of the areas where students gain real world experience. See the job descriptions below for more information on different positions at The Arbiter

All positions are student jobs; applicants must be taking at least 6 credits hours to qualify. Work-study is accepted. We will accept applications for all positions, even currently filled positions, as turnaround is heavy every semester.

Editor-in-Chief
This position is the leader of The Arbiter. It is elected by the Boise State Publications Board every February. Applications can be submitted year-round. The responsibilities of the editor vary. He or she must hire the editorial staff, assist in writing the budget (which is about $400,000), make policy decisions regarding the future of the organization and be a leader on staff.
This position is year-round. The editor must work over the summer to prepare for the fall semester. The editor is expected to keep regular office hours (about 30 per week). He or she is also the public face of The Arbiter and is expected to represent the needs and concerns of the organization.
Former editors-in-chief have gone on to work for various newspapers and news agencies, including The Idaho Press-Tribune, The Idaho Statesman, CNN, etc. Other editors have become educators nation-wide.

Business Manager
Responsible for the fiscal well being of The Arbiter. Duties include payroll and working with Editor-in-Chief to coordinate payroll budget for the school year and scheduling special sections of he paper. Also supervises all aspects of advertising, production, and distribution.

Marketing Director
Responsible for all marketing activities used to promote special issues, sections and events for The Arbiter. This is not an assistant position; you will be the Marketing Director. Activities include creating in-house ads for all events, posters, banners and any other promotional items. Also includes coordinating and planning special events. Must be creative and self-motivated. This is a great resume builder as it is hands on learning with many responsibilities. Also a great chance of advancement to the Business Manager position. Apply at jobs@arbiteronline.com

Ad Coordinator
Responsible for insuring quality, size, correctness and placement of all ads in The Arbiter. Very important position for financial security of the paper. Excellent job with most possibility of advancement to the Business Manager position. Must be very organized and detail oriented. Apply at jobs@arbiteronline.com

Sales Associates

Responsible for attracting, maintaining and ensuring customer satisfaction for The Arbiter. Has proven to have the possibility of being the highest paid student-position. Can work part-time while making full-time wages. Expand your network by meeting influential business leaders. Must have strong social skills and be self-motivated. Apply at jobs@arbiteronline.com

Production Manager

Responsible for overall layout and design of The Arbiter. Knowledgeable use of Adobe InDesign and layout experience needed. Attention to detail is important. Will be working in a fast-paced environment. Great on the job experience coordinating with both creative sides of editorial and business. Apply at jobs@arbiteronline.com

Assistant Production Manager

Responsible for supporting production manager and managing graphic designers. Helps to layout and design paper. Adobe InDesign experience is required. Meaningful on the job experience and portfolio builder. Great opportunity for advancement to Production Manager. Apply at jobs@arbiteronline.com

Graphic Designer

Responsible for designing creative ads for clients and The Arbiter. Also works with layout and graphics for the paper. Must be motivated to push the limits of design, and able to create cutting-edge work under a deadline. Apply at jobs@arbiteronline.com

Copy Editors
Copy Editors usually work two to three days a week during the regular school year. Those days are spent reading and editing the stories which will go to print in The Arbiter and then go to arbiteronline.com for the world to see. Copy Editors are expected to be well-versed in Associated Press Style and English grammar. If you like to read and rip on rookie writers, this is the job for you. Writers
The Arbiter always takes new writers. The door and the pages of the newspaper are always open for students who want to write for the organization. With the exception of some Senior Writers, this position is generally not paid, but does establish a precedence of responsibility which leads directly toward paid senior writer and editor positions. Multimedia Producers
If you like being behind the scenes we need people who want to be involved in video and audio production. From directing video and audio editing to creating commercials we need you. These positions are paid or internship credit positions depending on availability. Apply at jobs@arbiteronline.com

Reporters
The Arbiter is looking for news reporters to do spot reporting for online video. These reporters would gather information, write short scripts and appear on camera wherever necessary to the completion of a segment. Each of these positions come with an internship. Cover Boise State athletics and uncover stories on campus. This is a real chance for young journalists to become reporters. Apply at jobs@arbiteronline.com

Online Editor
The Onliine Editor is responsible for The Arbiter's website, arbiteronline.com. His/her duties include general website maintenance and posting the print edition content twice weekly as well as constantly adding new material on a daily basis. The Online Editor must work hand-in-hand with a large group of people including the Editor-in-Chief, Section Editors, Multimedia Producers and Production Managers to assure that all content is posted within a strict deadline. Office Manager/Bookkeeper
Responsible for invoice billing, contract management, and managing collections. Other duties include maintaining employee files and dealing with customer billing inquiries. Supervise office staff. Office Staff
Responsible for general office work including answering and directing phone calls, typing files, scheduling meetings. Other tasks include, but are not limited to, sending tear sheets to customers and reporting advertising errors to business manager. Distribution Supervisor
Responsible for supervising delivery staff. Duties include insuring all 7200 copies of The Arbiter are distributed both on and off campus locations, updating statistic spreadsheets, covering routes when necessary. Communication skills important. Apply at jobs@arbiteronline.com

Distributors
Route delivery personnel are responsible for placing copies of The Arbiter in newsstands and various locations on and around campus. Must have valid drivers license and good driving record for driving electric cars on campus. Must work early Monday and Thursday mornings (7 to 10). Apply at jobs@arbiteronline.com
